MoneyBee: An AI App to Help Young Indians Actually Understand Their Investments

Last week, during a Product Management workshop, we were given a deceptively simple challenge from “top management”:

Build a digital product for the Indian market that helps young people track money, understand investments, and make better financial decisions using AI.

No feature list.

No constraints.

Just a real problem.

We were split into teams of six, each playing a clear role: product, tech, design, research, business, and pitch. The goal wasn’t to design screens. It was to think like a real product team, end-to-end.

That’s how we started building Moneybee: making smart investments using AI...

Step 1: Understanding the Real Problem

We didn’t start with features. We started with a question:

Why do people struggle with investments, even when they earn well?

From discussions, research, and personal experience, a few patterns became clear:

  • Investments are scattered across apps like Zerodha, Groww, bank platforms, etc.

  • People see numbers, but don’t understand risk.

  • Most people can’t answer one simple question: “Am I investing correctly for my life goals?”

That led us to a strong insight:

People don’t need more investment products. They need clarity, direction, and confidence.

Step 2: From Many Ideas to One Clear Direction

We brainstormed multiple ideas like expense tracking, debt management, daily savings, future wealth planning, and subscription management.

But instead of building everything, we grouped and evaluated ideas based on value vs effort. Many “popular” features like budgeting or SIP planners scored low, not because they’re bad, but because they assume users already understand investing.

The features that stood out were the ones that reduced cognitive load and explained risk visually

Step 3: The Core Idea - The Investment Triangle

This is where Moneybee truly took shape.

We introduced a simple mental model: The Investment Triangle.

  • Base (Low Risk): Cash, savings, government-backed instruments

  • Middle (Medium Risk): Mutual funds, equities, real estate

  • Summit (High Risk): Options, futures, speculative assets

Instead of charts and jargon, Moneybee places your entire portfolio inside this triangle.

At a glance, users can see:

  • Where their money is today

  • Whether their portfolio is balanced or risky

  • How far are they from where they want to be in 5 years

Risk becomes visible, not abstract.

Step 4: How the Product Actually Works

We built the full product flow using Google AI Studio and designed Moneybee as an AI-powered companion, not a trading app.

A user can:

  • Aggregate investments (or use mock data for MVP)

  • See portfolio health visually inside the triangle

  • Chat with an AI assistant that explains insights in plain language

Users can ask:

  • “Is my portfolio too risky?”

  • “I have ₹10,000 extra this month—what should I do?”

  • “Am I aligned with buying a house in 5 years?”

Important detail:👉 Moneybee not only tells users what to buy. It explains who they are as investors and who they can become

Since Moneybee operates in the investment and wealth management domain, we had to design the product while respecting Indian regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements.

We consciously aligned the product with:

  • KYC norms (PAN/Aadhaar-based identity verification before portfolio aggregation)

  • SEBI guidelines, ensuring the app does not provide direct investment advice

  • Clear disclaimers stating that insights are informational, not recommendations

  • Data privacy principles, with user consent and secure handling of financial data

The AI assistant was designed to explain risk, patterns, and trade-offs, not suggest specific securities. This ensured compliance while still delivering value through clarity and education.

Step 5: User Journey & North Star Metrics

We designed two core journeys:

Current Portfolio Health

  • Awareness → Asset entry → Triangle visualization → Insight → Action nudges

  • North Star Metric: Weekly Portfolio Review Rate

Future Predictor & Chatbot

  • Login → Ask question → AI forecast → Storytelling → Behavioral nudges

  • North Star Metric: Forecast-to-Action Conversion Rate

We measured success not by app opens, but by behavior change

Step 6: Pre-Sales Pitch & Business Model

Moneybee is a long-term habit product, not a one-time tool.

B2C Model

  • Freemium → Premium

  • ₹99–₹149/month

  • Premium unlocks:

    • 5-year projections

    • Rebalancing alerts

    • AI surplus planning

    • Monthly “What should I do next?” plan

B2B Model

  • White-label engine for employers, banks, wealth platforms

  • ₹50–₹100 per user/month

  • Value: higher engagement, reduced financial anxiety

People don’t want more research.

They want answers.

What I Learned From Building Moneybee

This workshop wasn’t about building a perfect app. It was about thinking clearly.

My biggest takeaways:

  • Within just 2 hours, we can build a very good prototype using AI tools, which was not possible a year ago

  • Just stick to the goal and try to build an ecosystem around it

  • Visual clarity builds confidence faster than numbers

  • Good products reduce fear, not just friction

Moneybee isn’t just an app idea. It’s a way to help people understand money without overwhelm or anxiety.

That was our real goal, and that’s what we tried to build.
