How IoT, AI, and Blockchain Can Transform Farming

In this blog, I’ll walk you through a group project on Industry 4.0. As part of trimester II of the MBA in Digital Transformation at NMIMS Mumbai.

My team and I explored how Industry 4.0 technologies can be applied to solve real, pressing problems in Indian farming.

As we already know, Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economy, but it's also one of the most vulnerable sectors. India loses 26% of its crop yield annually due to plant diseases alone. Add in poor resource management like overuse of chemicals, improper irrigation, and lack of real-time monitoring, and the picture becomes even more concerning.

These challenges not only hurt productivity but also push rural farmers deeper into economic uncertainty.

Our goal was to design a solution that leverages technologies like IoT, AI, Big Data, and Blockchain to make Indian agriculture smarter, more transparent, and more sustainable.

Precision agriculture is an approach that combines Industry 4.0 elements with agriculture, is said to overcome these challenges. Farmers can easily track the climate condition, heat of the soil, crop condition, and many other features through IoT sensors.

Identification of the Issue:

Plant diseases are disruptions in the normal functioning of a plant caused by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, or nematodes. These pathogens invade plant tissues, leading to infections that affect growth, yield, and quality.

Plant Diseases occur due to pathogens entry, favourable weather conditions or through transmission.

Mismanagement in agriculture, i.e., improper handling of resources like water, soil, and pest control, leads to increased susceptibility to diseases and reduced crop productivity.

The causes of mismanagement in agriculture are:

  1. Improper Irrigation

  2. Inadequate Crop Rotation

  3. Overuse of Chemicals

  4. Lack of Timely Monitoring

Strategic Recommendations:

  • Develop Cost-Effective IoT Solutions: Create affordable, modular sensor kits for real-time monitoring of environmental conditions to optimize crop growth.

  • Promote AI-Driven Mobile Applications: Leverage AI-enabled, user-friendly mobile apps for personalized farming guidance accessible to farmers across regions.

  • Enhance Supply Chain Transparency: Integrate blockchain for transparency and traceability, ensuring fair pricing and quality assurance in agriculture.

  • Implement Regional Language in App: Integrate blockchain for transparency and traceability, ensuring fair pricing and quality assurance in agriculture.

Existing Solutions:

We reviewed the WayCool app as a benchmark. While effective, it lacked depth in personalization and broader adoption features.

Plan Ahead:

We proposed upgrades like photo-based crop analysis, customized care recommendations, and AI-based crop journey planning—from sowing to harvest.

Step-1

Step-2

Step-3

  • Collects data on local weather, soil type, crop type, and operation cycle time

  • Crop Health Monitoring with AI and I4.0 technologies

  • Crop will ask the farmers to upload photos of crops regularly (weekly/fortnightly)

  • Will provide tailored farming guidance

  • Crop Health Assessment, Potential Threats, Necessary Precautions

  • Tracking the progress and health of crops over time

  • Personalized agricultural advisory for improved yields

  • Crop Journey Planning from sowing to harvest to crop in for cost-efficient harvesting

  • Send back recommendations and health feedback

Key Challenges:

Despite the promise, we identified hurdles like:

  • Data privacy and ownership

  • Internet accessibility in rural areas

  • Device compatibility and pesticide compliance

We believe thoughtful design and policy alignment can address these effectively.

What I Learned:

This project gave me real exposure to how cross-functional thinking, by merging tech, design, user empathy, and strategy, can solve real-world problems.
